The next morning Steve hurried off to his meeting, but not before a quick round of morning sex. I picked up the condom wrappers that littered my bedroom and finished cleaning. I couldnât get pregnant, or catch any diseases, but I still had appearances to keep up. I appreciated the fact that Steve was so concerned with safety. That would do him good in life. While Steve was working on my case with the list of missing items, I had a shop to take care of. After a quick shower, I walked to my business. The morning was cool and Iâd be cleaning the mess of my shop, so I dressed accordingly in jeans and a black tank top, covered with a sweater for the morning chill.
Maggie was waiting for me outside the shop, with Mike at her side. She had her hair pulled into a neat ponytail and was wearing an outfit similar to my own, down to the black tank top. âDid you two plan your outfits again?â Mike asked, eyeing me up and down.
âI didnât know your husband was such a comedian,â I said dryly.
He ignored my remark much like I ignored his. âBaby, call me as soon as you need me to pick you up.â
âIâm fine,â she snapped. âIf you left me the truck, I could drive myself home.â
I moved away from them and opened the shop. The last thing I needed was to hear more of their arguing. It didnât last long as Maggie followed me into the shop moments later. âSorry about that,â she said as she tossed her purse in the corner. âIâm just so sick of being treated like Iâm this helpless little kitten. Did you hear him call me âbabyâ? Am I a little child? I am not his darn baby. Iâm not. Iâm a grown woman, dang it.â
âHeâs just scared and overprotective.â
âYou got that right! Wait, scared? Mikeâs not scared of anything.â
âHeâs scared of losing you.â
Her head dropped and she fiddled with her short fingernails. âI know,â she said softly. âI canât fix the fact that Iâm human, or that heâs a werewolf, or that this world is crazy. What can I do?â
âLearn to defend yourself however you can. As for Mike, heâs just going to have to come to grips with things on his own.â
âI read through that last book you gave me,â she said, perking up. She hurried over to the purse and pulled out the book. âI even marked a few things Iâd like to try, if youâll help me. Maybe after weâve cleaned up this mess.â
âSounds like a good idea. As we clean, weâll do inventory so we can tell the police whatâs missing.â
We cleaned and worked tidying up the shop. Theda and Amy had stolen almost ten thousand dollars worth of inventory. Iâd have to be more careful with my stock in the future. From now on, everything not on the shelf was under wards. Maggie walked down the street to pick up our lunch while I put in orders for supplies.
